A shooting at Planet Fitness in Roswell led to charges for a man who prosecutors hope to incarcerate without bail.
Roswell police detectives arrested Manny Page Trujillo Jr., 22, on Aug. 5 on charges of shooting at a vehicle causing injury, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.
Police said Trujillo Jr. shot Daniel Yanez in the leg on July 28, following a conflict between two groups gathered in the gym parking lot.
The motion for pretrial detention was filed Aug. 7, with a hearing is set for Aug. 17. Pending that hearing, Judge Jared Kallunki ordered that Trujillo Jr. could be released on a $50,000 cash or surety bond.
Police were called to the scene at 9:36 p.m. on July 28 for a reported shooting at the Planet Fitness on South Main Street. Yanez was driven to the Lovelace Hospital, with a bullet wound to the upper part of the back of his left leg.
Yanez told detectives that the shooting followed a situation earlier in the night when he said a gathering of two friend groups in the parking lot “became disorderly” and a fight ensued. Someone in a white truck then tried to run someone over, Yanez told police.
Sometime later the group returned in a gold sedan and another vehicle, read the criminal complaint.
“Daniel did not know what was occurring but observed Manny Trujillo armed with a handgun,” the complaint read. “Shortly thereafter, Daniel heard approximately eight gunshots. At the time, Daniel was seated in the driver’s seat of his red Pontiac, which was parked near the southwest comer of the parking lot. Daniel’s vehicle was struck multiple times by gunfire.”
Yanez described the pistol as being black with a gold barrel. He didn’t believe he was the “intended target,” police said.
Yanez told detectives he took cover during the shooting and then he and his friend fled. His friend, not at the hospital when detectives arrived, drove him to the hospital. Yanez gave them permission to search his car, where police found bullet holes.
A blue Toyota sedan was later found in the parking lot disabled in the shooting. Police linked the Toyota to Trujillo Jr.
Police determined Yanez’s vehicle was “in the crossfire” between Trujillo Jr.’s and another vehicle investigators believe was the shooter’s target.
When officers searched Trujillo Jr.’s house on Aug. 5, police found a 9mm green pistol with a gold barrel believed to be the one used to shoot Yanez.
The gun was sitting on top of a TV stand, where it appeared Trujillo Jr. had been playing Call of Duty. He was wearing a gaming headset when he was arrested.
