CARLSBAD — Goddard, Roswell and Carlsbad High Schools left the Jesus Fierro Invitational with strong performances Saturday, Aug. 29, at Alta Vista Middle School.
The Carlsbad boys’ and Roswell girls’ finished first in their respective divisions, while Goddard had two runners with top 10 finishes. The meet featured runners from Carlsbad, Hagerman, Hobbs, Roswell, Capitan, Goddard, New Mexico Military Institute, Jal, Loving and Mescalero Apache.
Junior Javion Scott set the pace for the Cavemen, finishing second among 52 runners in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:13.49. For the Cavegirls, sophomore Rainelle Ruiz placed first among 37 runners with a time of 22:00.27. Carlsbad secured a second-place team finish.
Senior Makenzie Hoover led the way for the Roswell girls, finishing second overall in 22:35.87. Junior Emmanuel Arambula paced Roswell’s boys, placing 17th in 20:47.15.
Goddard also had several strong individual finishes. Sophomore Jason Flamme placed ninth in the boys’ race with a time of 18:53.12. On the girls’ side, eighth-grader Melanie Delaney turned in a seventh-place finish, completing the course in 23:24.36.
Carlsbad will return to competition Saturday, Sept. 5, at the University of New Mexico Lobo Cross Country Invitational at the UNM North Golf Course in Albuquerque.
Roswell and Goddard will race again at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Ruidoso Invitational at Ruidoso High School.
