A beautiful, old-fashioned dessert featuring tender cinnamon apples layered over a buttery cake and finished with a rich, golden caramel glaze. This Caramel Apple Torte is perfect for fall entertaining—or anytime you want the irresistible combination of apples, cinnamon, and caramel.

Ingredients

For the Apple Topping

• 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

• 2 tablespoons butter

• ⅓ cup brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

For the Torte

• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 2 large eggs

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1½ cups all-purpose flour

• 1½ teaspoons baking powder

• ½ teaspoon salt

• ½ cup sour cream

For the Caramel Glaze

• ½ cup brown sugar

• ¼ cup butter

• ¼ cup heavy cream

• Pinch of salt

• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

1. Prepare the apples: Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-inch springform pan. In a skillet, melt the butter and add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until the apples begin to soften. Arrange the apples evenly in the prepared pan.

2. Make the torte batter: Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the sour cream, mixing just until combined.

3. Bake: Spoon the batter gently over the apples and smooth the top. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving platter.

4. Make the caramel glaze: Combine brown sugar and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cream and bring to a gentle simmer for 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the salt and vanilla.

5. Finish and serve: Drizzle the warm caramel glaze generously over the torte. Serve warm or at room temperature, with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

For an extra-special Southwest touch, add a tiny pinch of New Mexico red chile powder to the caramel glaze. The subtle warmth beautifully balances the sweetness of the apples and caramel.
