The Roswell Coyotes football team will face Alamogordo at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Tiger Stadium in Roswell’s first district game of the season.
Roswell (2-1) is coming off a 39-35 victory over the Rio Rancho Rams on Sept. 4 at the Wool Bowl. Alamogordo (1-2), meanwhile, fell to the Organ Mountain Knights 27-0 at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces in its last game.
Roswell head coach Jeff Lynn said his defense has steadily improved, but still believes there is work to do before the Coyotes take the field Friday.
“We’ve been talking about being a little more opportunistic,” Lynn said. “We need to cause more turnovers, tackle better and stop blowing assignments. The defense has got to get better. We’ll keep working and it’ll come together.”
While the defense searches for consistency, Roswell’s offense has been anything but quiet. Quarterback Andruw Fuentez has been the catalyst, completing 71.9% of his passes for 952 yards and 12 touchdowns with just two interceptions through the first three games.
One of his top targets has been Danny Castro, who hauled in 17 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns. On the ground, Luis Rodriguez added 80 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.
Tigers quarterback Rudy Wolfe and running back Nathaniel Cereceres led the way early this season. Wolfe threw for 88 yards and two touchdowns without an interception through Alamogordo’s first two games. Cereceres broke loose for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in the Tigers’ Aug. 21 home opener against Santa Fe.
Friday’s matchup is an opportunity for the Coyotes to carry the confidence of two high-scoring home wins and prove they can finish the job on the road. For Alamogordo, it’s a chance to bounce back from two straight road losses and remain unbeaten at home.
