Locals converged on Cahoon Park Saturday, Oct. 17 to see antique vehicles and raise money to help Chaves County residents struggling with breast cancer.

Vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles crowded the lawn on a section of Cahoon Park at 500 W. 8th St. in Roswell for the 4th Annual Cars for Breast Cancer Awareness event hosted by the Rollin Deuces, a local car club.

Car buffs slowly walked around each vehicle, as a DJ pumped out music. Vendors, food trucks were also at the event, with raffles for various prizes.

Danny Herrera, and his wife, Rose, a breast cancer survivor, are the show’s organizers. In all, Danny Herrera estimated that about 80 vehicles were on display at the event.

With the exception of last year, the Herreras and the Rollin Deuces car club, which is made up of Danny Herrera and some of his nephews, put on the show to raise money for two local nonprofits: the Chaves County Cancer Fund and the Angela Ramirez Memorial Foundation.

The Chaves County Cancer Fund is an all-volunteer nonprofit that provides financial assistance to Chaves County residents with cancer, according to the group’s website.

The Angela Ramirez Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit started by the children of a Roswell teacher who died from breast cancer in 2019. The foundation provides money to local teachers, school staff and students with breast cancer.

Danny Herrera said that the foundation “blessed” his wife with a $5,000 donation in 2022 to cover expenses such as gas for medical appointments and other costs.

That year the Herreras sought to do something to help others in similar situations. Danny Herrera, a longtime car enthusiast, decided to put on a car show.

“We do this event to fundraise for these organizations to give back and to give back to the community where we live,” Danny Herrera said.

He added that as of Saturday that he did not yet know how much was raised this year. In 2024, the show brought in $50,000 in donations.
