Roswell City Councilor Will Cavin is stepping down from the Ward 2 seat, effective Aug. 14.
A news release issued Wednesday by the city stated that Cavin, who has been on the council since January 2023, submitted his letter of resignation on July 27. Ward 2 primarily covers the northeast part of Roswell, north of College Boulevard and east of Main Street.
The announcement came after Cavin, who represented District 5 on the Chaves County Board of Commissioners from 2015 to 2023, prevailed in a three-way June 2 Republican primary for that same position. He is unopposed in the general election.
In May, Cavin told the Chaves County Federated Republican Women at their annual meeting that if voters decided to return him to the commission, he would resign from the council. Cavin told the Roswell Tribune Wednesday that despite not being sworn in until Dec. 31, he decided to step down after talking with Mayor Timothy Jennings.
“And so, I told him if he had someone, that I would do that for him,” Cavin said. Cavin declined to divulge the name of a possible successor, because he said there are multiple people interested in finishing out his unexpired term.
He added that such a move would give that person a say on things such as hiring a new city manager. Hess Yntema, the current manager, is slated to leave the position in late September.
The news release announcing Cavin’s resignation stated that Jennings, in his capacity as mayor, will recommend Cavin’s successor at the council’s meeting Monday, Aug. 13. A majority of the council would have to approve the recommended candidate to finish Cavin’s unexpired term on the council, which is set to end in December 2027.
