The Goddard Rockets fell to the Carlsbad Cavemen 35-19 in their home opener Friday, Aug. 28, at the Wool Bowl.
First quarter
Carlsbad quarterback Marley Munoz opened the scoring with his first rushing touchdown of the season with 26.2 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Second quarter
Goddard quarterback Nate Vazquez began the second quarter with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jose Porraz at the 8:47 mark.
Munoz followed this with another rushing touchdown to give the Cavemen a 14-7 lead with 2:35 left in the half.
Rockets running back Isaiah Montoya then ran in for a touchdown with 14.7 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Vasquez’ missed the extra point kick.
Third quarter
Munoz started the third quarter with his third rushing touchdown of the night at the 7:40 mark to give Carlsbad 21-13 advantage.
Fourth quarter
After the Rockets failed to score to open the quarter, Munoz finished a six-minute drive with another rushing touchdown to put the Cavemen ahead 28-13 with 4:42 remaining in the game.
Munoz then threw a touchdown pass to Jaxson Duarte to make it 35-13 at the 3:40 mark.
Despite the loss, Vazquez ended the game with a touchdown pass to receiver Noah Lujan. Vazquez missed the extra-point kick, leading to the 16-point defeat.
What’s next?
Goddard will return to action against Los Lunas at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 on the road.
Carlsbad next plays Lovington at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 at Ralph Bowyer Cavemen Stadium in their home opener.
