The Roswell football team held its first practice Monday, Aug. 3 at the high school practice field, and head coach Jeff Lynn said he liked what he saw.
“It was a good first day,” Lynn said. “We started working on the technique aspect of tackling. We also installed the fundamentals of football and our special teams, which was great.”
Lynn enters his 14th season as head coach and said the goal is to capture the program’s ninth state title. With a strong returning core that includes 17 seniors, he believes this is possible.
“He’s got a ton of reps over the past couple of years,” Lynn said. “He paid his dues at the lower levels and worked his way up. He knows where to go with the ball and what to do. He’ll just have to adjust to the speed, but I think he’ll learn quickly.”
Starting QB Andruw Fuentez to lead team
One of the many returners is junior starting quarterback Andruw Fuentez. He started for the freshman team in 2024 and junior varsity in 2025. Lynn said he is confident in Fuentez leading the program because of his experience.
Fuentez saw action in three varsity games last year as well. He went 8-for-11, while passing for 133 yards, according to MaxPreps.
Lynn said the two position groups that stood out to him were the lineman and linebackers. He was also impressed by junior Benjamin Vera. The three-star recruit is the No. 2 kicker in the state, according to Kohl’s National Kicker Ratings. He has gone 121-for-126 on extra points and field goals throughout his career. He also has an offer from New Mexico Highlands University.
Head Coach says speed an advantage
Lynn said he is excited for the season to start because of the talent he believes his team possesses.
“We got a lot of dudes on offense that can make plays really fast, and we fly around defensively,” Lynn said. “This is an extremely fast football team.”
