The Roswell High School girls’ soccer team finished with a 10-10 record during the 2025 campaign, missing the state playoffs.

Coyotes head coach Urbano Sosa said it is hard to make the postseason, but that the goal is to make it there this year.

“Ultimately, winning the district and making the state tournament are the goals,” Sosa said. “Once you’re in, you never know what can happen.”

Roswell has many returners on the roster this year, including senior midfielder Ayanna Patel, junior forward Emily Macias and sophomore midfielder Amerie Lagunas. Sosa said Macias is a player to keep an eye on, as she scored 22 goals last season.

Roswell opens its season against Goddard at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Cielo Grande Sports Complex.

The Coyotes later host the Alien City Invitational at the Sports Complex from Aug. 21-22. Their first game of the tournament is against Deming at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. The other teams in the tournament are Artesia, Las Cruces, Goddard, Silver, Organ Mountain, and Gadsden.

Roswell also competes in the Las Cruces Invitational at Las Cruces High School from Aug. 28-29.

The Coyotes start district play against Clovis at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, on the road, and will six district games: three at home and three away. The other teams in their district are Hobbs and Carlsbad.

Roswell plays 20 games in total, nine at home, five away, and six tournament matchups. Sosa said his team is playing a challenging schedule, especially since each district opponent is great.

“I think every team in our district is going to be pretty solid,” Sosa said. “Hobbs is usually the only team from our district that makes the playoffs, so they’re a staple.”
