LAS CRUCES — A triple threat of players formed the point of the spear Saturday afternoon for the Roswell High School football team.

The Coyotes moved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in district play with a 52-15 thumping of the Mayfield Trojans at the Field of Dreams football complex in Las Cruces.

Roswell saw herculean efforts by:

  • Quarterback Andrew Fuentez, who accounted for 287 total yards and four touchdowns. The junior signal caller hurled the pigskin for 219 passing yards and two touchdowns, including one 74-yard score. He also rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Wide receiver Izaic Gonzales, who recorded 134 yards worth of passes, including the 74-yard score.
  • Running back Luis Rodriguez, who showed his athleticism by streaming through the line, or taking pitchouts, to the tune of 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Receiver Ezequiel Barrientos also ran the ball across the goal line and receiver Danny Castro recorded a touchdown catch as well. Kicker Benjamin Vera field tagged on a pair of field goals to set Coyotes’ final score.

For Mayfield, who fell to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in district play, its two scores came early and late.

Already down 7-0 in the first quarter, the Trojans stopped the Coyotes on 4th and goal from the 3-yard line. On the next play, Mayfield quarterback Levi Montez found receiver Israel Cabañas streaking down the left side of the sideline for a 97-yard touchdown pass to knot the score 7-7.

But the Trojans would not score again until they were trailing 45-7 with 4:05 left in the game.

Meanwhile, using a mix of sweeps and speed option plays mixed in with down-field passes, the Coyotes jumped all over their hosts in the second quarter and built a 38-7 halftime lead.

The Coyotes will close the regular season when they play rival Goddard at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at the Wool Bowl. Mayfield hosts Artesia at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
