The Roswell Coyotes defeated the Rio Rancho Rams 39-35 Friday, Sept. 4, at the Wool Bowl.
First quarter
The Rams opened the scoring, as they ran a trick play that saw quarterback and wide receiver Crew Victor throw a 22-yard touchdown pass to starting quarterback Micah Takahashi to give Rio Rancho a 7-0 lead with 6:57 left.
Roswell running back Luis Rodriguez responded with a 29-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with 4:26 remaining.
Rams running back Eli Vigil fought back with a 4-yard rushing touchdown to put Rio Rancho ahead 14-7 with 46 seconds to play.
Second quarter
Rodriguez started the second quarter with a 14-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 with 11:08 to go.
Takahashi then threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to receiver Austin Seamons to put Rio Rancho up 21-14 with 5:43 left.
Third quarter
Fuentez began the second half with a 5-yard passing touchdown to receiver Danny Castro with 8:18 remaining. Kicker Benjamin Vera missed the extra-point try, so Roswell trailed 21-20.
The Coyote defense then got it done by forcing a fumble and recovering the ball. Fuentez followed this by throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to receiver Izaic Gonzales with 6:58 left. After this, Fuentez connected with receiver Francisco Guzman for a successful two-point conversion to put Roswell ahead 28-21.
Takahashi fought back with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Victor to tie the game at 28-28 with 4:05 to play.
Vera then got his revenge and buried a field goal to give the Coyotes a 31-28 advantage with 15 seconds to go.
Fourth quarter
Takahashi connected with Victor on an 18-yard touchdown pass to give Rio Rancho a 35-31 lead with 8:19 left.
Fuentez responded with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Castro with 4:03 remaining. Castro followed this with a successful two-point conversion run to give the Coyotes a 39-35 lead.
